Spanish cable operator deploys Nortel Networks optical solution to deliver residential multimedia services

MADRID -- R Cable, the fibre optics cable telecom operator in Spain’s Galicia region, has selected Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to build an optical DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) network, bringing improved multimedia capabilities to enterprise and residential customers.

The new network is intended to help address growing demand and satisfy R’s requirements for network reliability and scalability for a range of multimedia applications including Internet access, cable TV and telephony to residential customers and a full range of data and voice applications to enterprise customers.

The backbone project will link seven major cities in the four Galician provinces with broadband transmission capacity to improve the multimedia experience for its customers. It will also extend its current portfolio with new products and innovative services to increase productivity and efficiency and to help R to reduce capital and operating costs.

R has deployed Nortel Networks Optical Line System 1600, an optical platform using DWDM to maximize the capacity available in each fiber up to 320 Gigabits per second per pair.
