BIRKEROD, Denmark -- NKT Integration, a leading provider of integrated optical solutions, announces the development of PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) based Triplexer Transceivers designed for use in BPON, GPON and EPON FTTx PON networks. The transceivers have been developed to support both ITU-T FSAN and IEEE 802.3ah applicable standards for triple-play (voice, data and analog video) applications.

NKT Integration’s PLC Triplexer Transceiver has been developed in cooperation with Samsung Electronics and is the first solution based on a PLC chip with embedded PLC filter. Since the announcement of this joint development at OFC 2004 in Los Angeles, rapid progress in the project has seen the initial development of a BPON transceiver being extended to support GPON and EPON standards.

The integrated approach taken to hybridize the active devices on a silicon platform, together with the advantage of the wavelength filter being intrinsic to the platform, reduces the number of assembly steps and thus, providing a very cost competitive solution. The PLC filter is based on a unique design, which allows a compact size without compromising on performance. The transceiver package includes an analogue video amplifer for the analogue video channel.

“The PLC Triplexer Transceiver provides a cost effective, high performance solution for PON networks. We believe that the PLC platform provides the most viable path forward for a low-cost, high volume transceiver. We are extremely pleased that we have been able to develop our transceiver devices to also deliver GPON and EPON performance in a short period of time, satisfying the future higher speed requirements for PON, but still keeping the low cost advantage”, commented Søren Isaksen, CEO of NKT Integration.
