LG Smartphone Launch Cuts to the Quick

Oh hey, is it time for our William Tell act or is it just an LG smartphone launch event?

If you missed it, LG Electronics Inc. (London: LGLD; Korea: 6657.KS) 's unveiling of its G2 smartphone in Seoul, South Korea last Friday resulted in 20 injuries after the vendor released vouchers for free G2s in 100 red balloons, according to BBC reports. People turned up with knives on sticks and air-rifles in a bid to down the smartphone vouchers hanging from the helium balloons.

Here's how it went down:

"LG Electronics deeply regrets that a number of Korean participants were injured during an outdoor promotional event in Seoul, Korea," the firm said in a statement.

It's not clear if LG was trying to ape Nena's Cold War classic 99 Luftballons with the stunt or the company just really digs the Butthole Surfers.

Re: Freaks for free stuff What about lady with the knife taped on the end of the stick that gave her just enough reach to take out a few throats.  She must be a North Korean out on a hunting trip that got caught up with this event.

Re: Freaks for free stuff That free stuff happened to be a KRW 950,000 ($950 USD) item, in a country that frowns upon heavy subsidies?   And the organizers are surprised by the outcome?

Re: Freaks for free stuff Some French people were hurt - but there English wasn't terribly good, so they didn't count

Flying Turkeys This reminds me of when the fictional staff of WKRP celebrated Thanksgiving by dropping live turkeys from it's traffic helicopter.  (They don't fly.)  At least LG didn't drop the phones over Seoul.

Re: Freaks for free stuff The first cut is the deepest, eh?

Re: Freaks for free stuff I watched this yesterday and found it terrifying. You'd think people would learn lessons from countless Black Friday tramplings just to get the latest tickle me Elmo.

Attendees had BB guns and SPEARS. Yes, what could go wrong?

Re: Freaks for free stuff Wow that's weird. You can tell that half of the people attending LG event weren't into technology at all... They just wanted free stuff. Ouch.

Freaks for free stuff Woah, that just confirms it -- people love free stuff. I've seen things get nasty for trade show chotskies before too. I'm a little worried the same will happen over the new Light Reading t-shirts...

PS. Kinda weird LG worded it, "regrets that a number of Korean participants were injured." I'm sure they were all Korean, but still...
