NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -– Mindspeed Technologies today released the industry’s first semiconductor solution to implement new resilient packet ring (RPR) technology for next-generation Internet protocol (IP) ring-based metro and intra-point-of-presence (intra-POP) networks. Mindspeed Technologies is the Internet Infrastructure business of Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT).

Mindspeed’s first product for RPR networks is the CX29950 RingMaker ring processing unit (RPU), which offers up to 5 Gbps of data throughput on a pair of OC-48 (2.4 Gbps) RPR network rings. It is the first in a planned family of silicon and software solutions for RPR networks and the emerging 802.17 RPR standard, and will enable routers, servers, switches, cable head-end equipment, digital loop carriers and other networking platforms to cost-effectively add carrier-class, data-optimized functionality to the current infrastructure for enterprise and metropolitan-area networks. The resulting RPR networks will enable carriers to more rapidly and reliably provision bandwidth to their customers while reducing operational costs.

“Mindspeed Technologies is leading the way to more efficient, higher-bandwidth ring networks with the industry’s first silicon solution for resilient packet rings,” said Raouf Halim, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant. Halim will become chief executive officer of Mindspeed Technologies when it becomes a separate company. “The addition of RPR solutions to our broad product portfolio also positions us to offer comprehensive system solutions across the full range of end-to-end transport requirements for new high-value IP services.”
