CUPERTINO, Calif. -- The industry's first metro area network solution that delivers full broadcast and digital video capability over Resilient Packet Rings (RPR) was announced today by Luminous Networks(TM). This allows telecommunications carriers and cable service providers to evolve their networks to a more efficient packet-based system to support a range of voice, data and video applications. The new video cards are the latest addition to Luminous' PacketWave(TM) metro switch family, which supports a broad range of services over a single intelligent platform with a common management and provisioning system. These new video services are enabled by Luminous' Asynchronous Serial Interface (ASI) and Intermediate Frequency (IF) video cards, which easily plug into the company's PacketWave metro optical access platform. In addition to video transport services, carriers are deploying PacketWave for a range of revenue-generating services, including T1/E1 TDM voice services, Ethernet private line services, and virtual private networks via transparent LAN services. Efficient multi-service transport is enabled by RPR technology, an emerging IEEE networking standard.
