EISINGEN, Germany -- Lightmaze Solutions AG, the recognised specialist for optical networks, has added a new member to its YUMIX platform: the YUMIX 4ooo A model is a low-cost CWDM/DWDM solution with 8 channels. The system is specially designed for the "first mile", that is, the connection of a location to a carrier network – ideal for the end-to-end provision and monitoring of services.

On account of its outstanding power features and the low investment costs involved, the YUMIX 4ooo A is ideal as an entry-level solution for setting up an intelligent optical network: the protocol-transparent platform supports data rates from 8 Mbps to 2.7 Gbps over distances of 60 to 100 kilometres without signal amplification. All in all, distances of up to 300 kilometres are possible. Under these conditions, all common transmission protocols can be used: from OC-3/...-48, STM-1/...-16 and ATM, through Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet (GE), 2 x GE, Fibre Channel (FC) and 2 x FC, to ESCON, FICON, Sysplex Timer, FDDI and Coupling Link. YUMIX 4000 A is also ideally suitable for the transmission of video data (270 Mbps D1). HDTV transmission is planned for follow-up models.

The new platform supports point-to-point and ring structures. All topologies, including meshed networks (Mesh) can be realised in conjunction with YUMIX 4ooo M or YUMIX 4ooo E systems as interconnection points in the branches of the carrier. In this case, YUMIX 4ooo A acts as an access point on the customer side to the public carrier network. In this way the interconnection point can also be set up at the location of the customer – an absolutely unique characteristic of the YUMIX family.

Of course, the new YUMIX 4ooo A model works smoothly not only with other members of the YUMIX family, but can also be seamlessly integrated into any existing operating environment.

The platform integrates a transparent TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) solution, which allows multiplexing for an individually configurable number of data flows. This makes YUMIX 4ooo A systems extremely flexible: as a rule, no hardware components have to be changed in the event of changes in requirements. The TDM module can be used alone or can be combined with WDM technology (Wavelength Division Multiplexing). The tributary (local) and line (remote) interfaces are implemented separately as independent modules. The electrical connections are made of copper, and at optical level wavelengths of 850 nm to 1630 nm are supported.

Thanks to its technical properties, the YUMIX 4ooo A platform is ideal for the use of optical Ethernet on the so-called first mile (frequently also referred to as last mile, local loop or metro access network). With respect to running costs and investment expenditure, the first mile, that is, the distance from the customer to the interconnection point of the carrier, is the most important line in the network. Thanks to the protocol-transparent data transmission and the large bandwidth of the YUMIX 4ooo A systems, carriers can now make full use of the many advantages of the Ethernet protocol: they can offer their customers new services such as optical VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and SANs, or dynamic services such as day-night switching at favourable prices and thus open up new sales sources, cut running costs and optimise the deployment process for services.

The integrated management software makes an important contribution here: it significantly reduces the administration and configuration of the YUMIX 4ooo A, and cuts the time required for everyday administration tasks to a minimum.

With its dimensions of 44 x 482 x 460 mm (H x W x D), the YUMIX 4000 A housing fits into any standard rack. Yet it still saves space – it occupies only one height module.

These numerous outstanding technical features, its enormous flexibility and versatility make the YUMIX 4ooo A platform one of the most reasonably-priced universal solutions to meet all of the network requirements in the fields of access, metro-access and SAN.
