LAS VEGAS -- JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today at the NetWorld + Interop (N+I) conference announced availability of a new version of its WaveReady™ Series of subsystems for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) developing WDM metro access/edge applications. Designed to be compatible with networks worldwide, the improved WaveReady™ Series offers OEMs a cost effective way of adding market-leading integrated protection and leveraging the popularity of the small form factor pluggable (SFP) design for greater application coverage.

WaveReady™ modules are designed to be ready for immediate OEM integration and network deployment. The release available today includes the new WaveReady™ 700 Series transponders (WRT-760 and WRT-740XLR), a new version of WR 3000 Series optical platform (WR 3500-F), and a new communication and management module (COMM-200) with an integrated, updated Node Manager.

The client-side SFP transponder in the WaveReady™ 700 Series allows developers to reduce costs by changing only the channel-specific client module rather than the entire board. The WRT-760 also eliminates the need to purchase a separate protection card because the 760 transponder has an integrated protection switch. In addition, these WaveReady™ modules are backward compatible with previous WaveReady™ modules, provide 3R (reshape, re-time, and regenerate) operation, and use market-leading in-band channel management technology.

The WaveReady™ 700 Series transponders (WRT-760 and WRT-740XLR) are multi-rate, protocol independent transponder modules which translate optical signals between a variety of client-side interfaces into a long-reach, single-mode, dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) interface. The WRT-760 integrates the functionality of a transponder with a bi-directional, optical layer protection switch for individual wavelength protection. The WRT-740XLR is a multi-rate bi-directional transponder that converts 1310 nm optical signals to long reach single-mode dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical interfaces. WRT-740XLR has been designed specifically to support extended dispersion tolerance to 180 km at OC-48.

The WaveReady™ 3500-F (WR 3500-F) is a fan-cooled version of the already available WR 3500 optical platform. It is a 7U high platform designed to house up to fourteen WaveReady 3000 series modules.

The WaveReady™ Communications Module 200 (COMM-200) is a higher performance version of the current WaveReady™ management module. It provides monitoring, communication, and management of WaveReady modules when mounted in a WaveReady 3000 Series platform such as the WR 3500-F or the WR 3100. The COMM-200 has multiple Ethernet ports and RS-232 access to TL1 and SNMP V3 management through the Node Manager software with a graphical user interface (GUI). By using the embedded management channel, a COMM-200 can manage modules in a remote shelf, such as a customer premise located device, and it is compatible with third party SNMP-based management tools such as HP’s OpenView™.

Part of the COMM-200 management module, the WaveReady™ Node Manager is an intuitive GUI software package used in conjunction with the communications module to provide easy-to-use fault and status management functions for remote and local WaveReady™ equipment.
