DUBLIN -- Intune Technologies, a recognised global leader in optoelectronic solutions, announced the release to market of its new fibre-optic sensor interrogator, the AltoWave5500. This breakthrough patented technology brings the advantages of telecoms lasers to the fiber-optic sensor market. The AltoWave5500 sets an aggressive new benchmark in the performance-cost ratio for the sensing industry, greatly enhancing its ability to deliver solutions into Oil and Gas, Civil Engineering, Petrochemical and Smart Structure applications. Installations of AltoWave platform solutions are underway in lead customer sites.

Dr. Jens Buus, Chairman of Intune’s Advisory Board and recognised expert in tunable lasers, commented, “This is a significant ‘first’ for the fiber-optic sensing industry as the Intune AltoWave platform applies a semiconductor laser with nano-second electronic tuning capability. This combination results in a robust, optimum accuracy and high speed laser system that is ideal for field deployment in harsh environments. It is the perfect complement to fibre-optic sensors.”

“What makes this such a breakthrough in sensor systems,” says Tom Farrell, CTO of Intune, “is the combination of rapid tuning, high accuracy and ruggedness. We have achieved high accuracies over a wide temperature range while keeping the cost down. This is important for example in the Oil Industry, where optical sensors are used for oil well monitoring to improve yields. The AltoWave platform has an exciting roadmap ahead that will push the limits of the performance-cost ratio for sensor interrogation.”

The AltoWave5500 comes equipped with an embedded PC, it is software programmable and it is capable of storing and analysing large quantities of data. All of these benefits are packed into a form factor that is four times smaller than existing products. The AltoWave5500 is now available from Intune as a stand-alone unit ready for lab and test use or in OEM format for integration into final systems. Customers are currently participating in Intune’s comprehensive evaluation program, fully supported anywhere in the world today.
