Huawei Releases Next-Generation Wi-Fi 7 Home Gateway and FTTR for Home Solution at MWC

During the Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023), Huawei released a next-generation ONT home gateway featuring XGS-PON and Wi-Fi 7 technologies. Huawei also released OptiXstar F30 series products for the FTTR for Home solution to meet the requirements of home entertainment and digital applications, and to promote the prosperity of the smart home industry in the F5.5G 10G era.

With the advent of F5.5G and the Internet of Everything (IoE), digital applications such as 4K/8K video, VR/AR, high-resolution games, remote office, and online video conferencing have been growing more popular, but they also have more demanding requirements for network quality. For instance, home users have been demanding more premium, more immersive experiences. They have been moving away from voice and standard Internet access to new applications such as cloud games, 8K video, and interactive AR/VR. To support these applications, communications technologies need to evolve, so do Wi-Fi standards. The IEEE working group has already released the Wi-Fi 7 R1 standard, and 55 countries have authorized Sub-7 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi.

Huawei actively participated in the technical research into and discussions of Wi-Fi 7 standards. At MWC 2023, Huawei released the OptiXstar V878, the industry's first tri-band Wi-Fi 7 ONT to support XGS-PON. This new product has been attracting a lot of attention from operators and industry partners. Similar to other FTTR OptiXstar F30 products, the OptiXstar V878 also features a simple design with built-in antennas. It can perfectly blend with many different styles of interior design.

Compared with Wi-Fi 6 products, the OptiXstar V878 significantly improved the speed, concurrency, latency, and coverage.

  • In terms of speed, the physical air interface of the OptiXstar V878 delivers 19.6 Gbps, twice that of typical Wi-Fi 6 products. It supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequency bands; the frequency bandwidth has been expanded to 320 MHz; and it uses 4096-QAM modulation, a higher order than before. In addition, it supports 10GE LAN in the downstream, ensuring smooth playback of 8K video; supporting an immersive VR/XR or metaverse experience; and providing robust throughput for various home storage services.

  • In terms of concurrency, the OptiXstar V878 doubles the number of data channels using an innovative hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology that supports hybrid coding of digital and analog signals. This increases the number of concurrent connections supported to 128. It provides stable connections with a guaranteed bandwidth for smart home IoT appliances.

  • In terms of latency, the OptiXstar V878 minimizes the latency using a multi-link mechanism that includes the MAC architecture with enhanced multi-link aggregation, multi-link channel access, and multi-link transmission technologies that support multi-channel combination and automatic channel switching. The OptiXstar V878 also uses innovative algorithms to suppress interference better, and it can achieve a downstream Wi-Fi rate of up to 10 Gbps.

  • In terms of coverage, the OptiXstar V878 uses multi-beam smart antenna technologies to multiply the antenna space utilization. The beam-level antenna has been optimized to improve coverage by 30%.

During the MWC, Huawei built a cutting-edge immersive FTTR showcase to demonstrate the industry's first all-optical 2,000 Mbps OptiXstar F30 product for the Huawei FTTR for Home solution. The product features an aesthetic design, superior experience, and simplified O&M. In addition, this showcase also shared successful FTTR use cases to help global operators develop premium home broadband services.
