The week between Christmas and New Year's is vacation time for many folk. It may also be time for some furtive company shutdowns -- when corporate bigwigs aim to save costs by quietly suspending business operations. After all, with most people's minds on eggnog and mistletoe, who'd be the wiser?

At least one analyst thinks the tactic could pay off. Shaw Wu of AmTech Research writes in a note today that SAN/LAN component maker Finisar Corp. (Nasdaq: FNSR) appears to be "in the midst of a firm-wide holiday lockdown with the exception of key revenue-generating employees."

Finisar had the answering machine on; no one could be reached in person to verify or deny. But Wu notes that if it's true the company's taken a temporary powder, the cost savings could make a dent of as much as $1 million in the company's operating expenses, which he estimates will be about $21.3 million for the January quarter.

re: Finisar Furlough Queried
Finisar has moved into variety of product lines, This has not helped the company because its contribution has not be sufficiently deep. It conducts in the areas of Optical products, test equipment, storage products, and local area networks, etc. The marketing of these products presents a tremedous challenge. It is my assesment that it would be extremely hard for Finisar to succeed.

Bobby:

Pretty close, but you only get to smoke half that cigar. The next level is too far. There is no such thing as a profitable box-level-play these days. Further I would not want to start a new systems-level play (with my own money), even with a business base like Finisar.

JDSU? Obvious but ho-hum play. I would much rather see Sun pick them up. But lately Scott has been satisfied to let strategic marketing blow smoke up his ass. Second best: Cisco. John picked up LinkSys, so maybe he thinks he has that bet covered. Third choice: JDSU.

re: Finisar Furlough Queried
Is it only me or is JDSU trying to become the "George Steinbrenner" of the optical components market? Buying Finisar, and anyone else that happens to dabble in the optical component market, seems a bit like the cookie monster gorging itself...again. Isn't this akin to some sort of anti-trust violation? Come on "George" you've already got all the best batsmen and pitchers, and now you want to stuff your bullpen so no one else can compete? Don't you just love overzealous owners who think their way is the only way? Who's next? Bookham? Hey, now THERE'S a rumor.
