Pandatel launches the COP-FE, a TDM multiplexer for the Circuit Emulation Services over Package (CESOP) standard

HAMBURG -- Pandatel now offers the COP-FE a TDM multiplexer for the Circuit Emulation Services over Package (CESoP) standard. It transports voice traffic from up to four E1/T1 interfaces and data of up to two 10/100BaseTX Ethernet LAN interfaces via IP Packet-Switched Networks (PSN). Providing an appealing cost-performance ratio, the COP-FE attracts carriers as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. It enables customers to make use of cost-effective IP packet-switched transport networks within the metro and access area for their internal voice traffic without having to replace existing equipment, such as switches or telephone systems, with a completely new Voice over IP system (VoIP). Service providers, ISPs and carriers, in turn, may use the COP-FE to offer traditional services of their customers via cost-effective transport networks. Cellular network providers too are able to connect their GSM base stations via packet-switched networks to the base station control center. Additionally, the COP-FE offers two LAN interfaces that are able to safely and independently handle data traffic, thanks to port-based double VLAN tagging (Virtual LAN), of two various enterprises with one device only.

The COP-FE offers access to the network via two 10/100BaseTx copper ports or 100BaseFX fiber optic ports. The double connection may serve as redundant line or - parallel port-based data transmission.

To date, many enterprises have not yet invested in VoIP architecture (Voice over IP) that is still complex and cost-intensive. Additionally, the many competing VoIP standards (H.323, SIP, MGCP, Megaco/H.248, SCTP etc.) have contributed to confusion. The CESoP technology on the other hand is a cost-saving and easily implemented alternative compared to conventional VoIP technologies that will again boost voice traffic via packet-switched networks.

A particular challenge is to maintain clock synchronization between CESoP technology and the original TDM bit stream. In order to compensate for jitters typical for packet-switched networks during packetization CESoP-enabled TDM multiplexers such as Pandatel's COP-FE are equipped with an egress buffer that buffers packets prior to transporting them into the TDM network of the recipient. To minimize time for packetization and variance diverse QoS mechanisms (quality of service) of packet-switched networks are available such as: VLAN priority field, MPLS label or IP ToS field (type of service).

Carrier class voice quality is ensured only if the sender's original TDM framing is reproduced with precision during transport from IP packet-switched network to the TDM network. To achieve this Pandatel developed special algorithms along with an additional external clocking interface. The device is suitable for adjustment to - existing system clocking by means of an additional reference.

COP-FE configuration and monitoring is carried out via SNMP or Telnet. In addition, it provides a web-based user interface. TFTP is used to easily transfer software updates or to quickly download configuration and log files.
