AMSTERDAM -- ECOC 2001 -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced the availability of its second 980 Coupler Fiber, a product featuring reduced cladding size, making it perfect for use in ultra- small devices where dual operation fiber for the 980 and 1550 nanometer spectrums is required. The fiber is packaged in a reduced cladding size of 80um (microns) as opposed to the standard 125um. The 980 Coupler Fiber would be used in devices such as fiber couplers and wave division multiplexers (WDMs). In a separate release:Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced that TyCom Ltd. will be its first customer for UltraWave(TM) optical fibers -- a new family of fibers created by Lucent's Optical Fiber Solutions (OFS) business that enables submarine network providers to dramatically increase the capacity of ultra-long-haul undersea networks. TyCom will deploy UltraWave fiber in its 5,600-mile (9,010 km) TyCom Global Network (TGN) Pacific North transoceanic network segment connecting Japan and the United States. In a separate release:Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced an addition to its Optical Fiber Solutions (OFS) LC family of products, the LC Angled Polished Connector (APC). Unveiled this week at the ECOC 2001 trade show, the LC-APC is designed to meet the needs of the cable television, fiber to the home and dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) markets. The LC-APC is a small form factor connector -- part of the continuing evolution in miniaturization -- that doubles the density of fiber termination equipment and incorporates the new one-piece design currently used in standard single mode connectors to create a more rugged, robust product. In a separate release:Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced that its Optical Fiber Solutions (OFS) business has achieved a major improvement in fiber density and is introducing a new multiple application fiber cable that meets tunnel safety standards while being an ideal cable for normal outside plant use. Lucent has increased the fiber density support of its MiDia(TM) fiber optic cable to permit a single MiDia cable to carry up to 300 fibers, greatly increasing the efficiency of fiber installation in ducts. With fiber count support now up to 300 fibers, OFS is setting a new benchmark for easy installation of high fiber count cables. In a separate release:Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced two new erbium-doped fibers, further broadening its portfolio of amplification fibers. The new fibers, which were developed by the Specialty Fiber Group of Lucent's Optical Fiber Solutions (OFS) business, are being shown here at ECOC 2001 this week. The new Lucent extended L-band erbium-doped fiber is ideal for amplified systems utilizing a broad range of wavelengths up to 1625 nanometers. The fiber has a high erbium concentration to reduce the required fiber length for the amplification process, and an optimized composition of additional co- dopants to extend the gain bandwidth. This silica-based fiber offers high efficiency, low splice loss, and relies on established manufacturing processes. In support of its new L-Band product, Lucent will be presenting an invited paper at ECOC entitled Silica Based Erbium Doped Fiber Extending the L-Band to 1620+ nm. In a separate release:Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced it has expanded the range of its dispersion compensation modules (DCM) to meet growing optical network needs. The DCMs are products of Lucent's Optical Fiber Solutions business and are being shown here at ECOC 2001. Dispersion compensating modules are used to mitigate the dispersion of light within optical fiber systems by counter-balancing the dispersion, enabling much further reach of lightwaves without regeneration. "Raman amplification is a necessity for 40 gigabits-per-second (Gb/s) systems, and we are excited about being able to offer modules which provide dispersion compensation, dispersion slope compensation, and Raman amplification in a single module," said Kenneth Walker, vice president of Lucent's Specialty Fiber Division. "Our DCM improvements provide a highly cost-effective solution for consumers wanting their networks to reach greater distances."Lucent Technologies Inc.
