Huawei announces global sales record of $3.83B in 2003; international sales grew 90%, domestic rose 29%

SHENZHEN, China -- Huawei Technologies today announced that its global sales in 2003 reached 3.83 billion US dollars, a new sales record in the company’s 16-year history. Among the total sales, its international sales continues to rise quickly from US$552 million in 2002 to US$1.05 billion in 2003, claiming a strong growth of 90% from the previous year. Huawei’s international market now makes up 27% of its total sales orders. Meanwhile the company’s domestic market also enjoyed a 29% increase from US$2.148 billion in 2002 to US$2.78 billion in 2003. Compared with the previous year, the company’s total sales volume has increased by 42%.

2003 saw Huawei making many breakthroughs in different areas. In the fixed-line sector, Huawei U-SYS NGN has been deployed in over 10 countries including China, UK, Singapore and Brunei. U-SYS NGN has been listed as a world-wide major brand by Dittberner, taking the No. 2 position in the world-wide NGN market. In xDSL market, Huawei won the second position in the world-wide market based on equipment shipment according to Gartner while in China Huawei achieved No.1 position in both China Telecom (two rounds in a single year) and China Netcom bidding projects, winning over 40% market share. According to Gartner, Huawei holds No.2 position in the worldwide xDSL market starting from the second quarter of 2003 based on shipment information. By the end of last year, there had been over 130 million lines of Huawei C&C08 switches running on the global telecom network with 25 million newly-added lines in year 2003 alone.

In the mobile sector, Huawei has achieved significant progress in 2003. Huawei has signed two commercial WCDMA contracts, one with Hong Kong’s SUNDAY to provide an end-to-end solution ranging from core network, radio access network, 3G mobile intelligent network, mobile data service platform and 3G handsets, and the other with UAE’s Etisalat which has already launched its 3G services starting from Dec. 24, 2003, using Huawei’s total WCDMA R4 solution. Thus Etisalat has become the first 3G service provider in the Middle East and Arab world. In CDMA2000, Huawei products have been deployed in over 20 countries. Especially in the area of cdma450, Huawei has become the world’s largest equipment supplier, having equipment used in over 10 countries including Russia, Belarus and Portugal. In 2003, Huawei has also launched its mobile handsets including PHS and cdma450.

In the datacom sector, Huawei also made remarkable progress in 2003. According to CCID, Huawei has achieved over 40% market share in China’s high-end datacom market while in the low and middle end market Huawei has also gained 28% market share. In the international market Huawei datacom sales also doubled in 2003. And the Huawei advocated 5th Generation routers are used in China, UK, Thailand etc.

In 2003 Huawei strengthened its partnership strategy in many areas. Besides its continuing cooperation with Intel, TI, Motorola, Qualcomm, SUN, Agere Systems and Microsoft, Huawei has forged new partnership in some other areas. In data communications area, Huawei and 3COM signed an agreement to set up a joint venture in March, which went into actual operation on the 18th of November. In TD-SCDMA, Huawei signed an MOU with Siemens Mobile in August to set up a joint venture to focus on a total end-to-end solution on TD-SCDMA. Huawei also signed an agreement with Infineon in September to cooperate in low-end WCDMA handset platform. In November, Huawei and Microsoft joined hands to unveil an integrated enterprise communications solution, U-SYS WorkSpace which combines Huawei’s edge on NGN and Microsoft’s OA (Office Automation).

In 2003, Huawei applied for over 1,000 patents, making its total patent applications to add up to 3888 (686 have been authorized so far) and 426 PCTs. By the end of 2003, Huawei had successfully registered a total of 607 trademarks in more than 90 countries and regions. All these have greatly helped Huawei to better protect its intellectual property rights.
