SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- PMC® (PMCS), the semiconductor innovator transforming networks that connect, move and store big data, announced today the introduction of PM5442 META 120G, the industry’s highest port density 10G, 40G and 100G converged Carrier Ethernet and OTN Framer solution. With cloud computing, streaming video and mobile data applications doubling network traffic every 18 months, Carrier Ethernet Switch and Router interconnects demand high-density 10, 40, and 100Gbps interface cards. As part of PMC’s powerful portfolio of Metro OTN solutions, the PM5442 META 120G enables high-density Carrier Ethernet and OTN line-cards and IPoDWDM integration on service provider switches and routers, P-OTPs, and PTN equipment.

OTN Enables Seamless Convergence of Packet Traffic and Optical Connectivity

Building on the leadership of the META 20G, PMC’s PM5442 META 120G enables OEMs to substantially reduce total development costs by addressing high-speed line-card needs with a single silicon platform. As interconnect speeds increase, OTN is emerging as the de-facto protocol enabling seamless and scalable convergence of IP infrastructure and the optical transport domain. OTN provides the operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) functionality necessary for a DWDM transport infrastructure, and service providers see value in extending the OTN OAM out to the router interface. Additionally, OTN supports forward error correction (FEC) for reach extension, significantly increasing the number of links over which 100G can be deployed.

Service providers are looking for routers with dual-mode Ethernet and OTN interfaces to achieve optical performance and protocol convergence in their connections to the optical transport network,” stated Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst at Infonetics Research. “Our global service provider survey found that 84% of responding service providers plan to deploy OTN on 40G (OTU3) and 100G (OTU4) router ports, and the PMC META 120G is designed to support these requirements.”
