A robot shark spy drone might have previously seemed too outlandish even to be included in the villain's lair scene in a Bond movie -- but fear not! -- because the US Navy now has one, so celluloid glory can't be far behind.
The "GhostSwimmer" underwater drone is nearly 5 feet long and weighs 100 pounds. It looks and swims like a shark and can dive to 300 feet or prowl along menacingly with its fin out in shallow water. Buzz 60 News has some video of the remarkably realistic-looking remote vehicle so you can get the picture:
The Navy is experimenting to see if it can be used for intelligence-gathering missions.
So is there a communications angle? Well, maybe, just maybe the little devils could be used for undersea cable maintainence at some point down the line. (See Forget the Internet, Brace for Skynet.)
Mostly though, I just can't wait to see one in a movie. It will need a laser on its head, naturally...
