SHELTON, Conn. -- TranSwitch® Corporation (NASDAQ: TXCC), a leading provider of high-speed semiconductor solutions for voice, data and video communications, today announced the EtherMap®-PDH, a flexible device that delivers new revenue-generating Ethernet services into the last mile over existing copper infrastructure. Ethernet-over-PDH (EoPDH) is a complementary extension of Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH (EoS) to bring cost-effective Ethernet services closer to the subscriber.

EtherMap-PDH is a protocol converter that transports Ethernet services over existing PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) signal formats. The flexibility of the device enables the mapping of Ethernet frames via GFP/HDLC/LAPS into bonded PDH signals. EtherMap-PDH is compliant with the recently ratified ITU-T G.8040 and G.7043 standards. The device can be designed into any platform that has a PDH interface for wire line and wireless applications. It supports three modes of operation that are applicable to a variety of wire line and wireless applications, including base station, router/switch and TDM applications:

  • Ethernet frames mapped into 16 x E1/T1/J1

  • Ethernet frames mapped into 3 x DS3

  • Ethernet frames and existing legacy services multiplexed into a channelized DS3, with 1+1 protection

In the wire line market, the EtherMap-PDH enables next generation services reusing existing access infrastructure. Specifically, the EtherMap-PDH device can extend the revenue-generating opportunity of an existing legacy SONET/SDH platform (Central Office located) that does not have the capability of

providing Ethernet services. This is accomplished by incorporating a cost-effective line card at the CPE platform with the EtherMap-PDH device (E1/T1/J1 or DS3 application). The Ethernet service is provided over the existing last-mile copper infrastructure while reusing the legacy CO-located SONET/SDH platform. In addition, service providers can increase revenue opportunities by offering Ethernet services without cannibalizing the existing legacy services (frame relay, ATM, T1/E1/J1, etc.). The EtherMap-PDH device (M13/G.747 application) has the capability of multiplexing Ethernet frames and legacy services (frame relay, ATM, T1/E1/J1, etc.) into a channelized DS3, with 1+1 protection.

For wireless applications, the deployment of 3G wireless networks will inherently require more bandwidth between the Base Station and Base Station Controller. The EtherMap-PDH device provides 32 Mb/s of bandwidth (16 x E1/T1/J1), while also taking advantage of the economic merits of Ethernet for an IP UTRAN (Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network). More importantly, the GFP/VCAT and LCAS features will improve performance for latency-sensitive applications and network availability, respectively.
