PETALUMA, Calif. -- Calix, a supplier of advanced telecommunications platforms that simplify voice, data, and video service delivery over both optical and metallic access networks, announced that Platform Release 2.1 became generally available last month and is already shipping in volume. With over 1,500 Calix C7 simplified services platforms shipped to over 100 US incumbent LECs, Platform Release 2.1 allows service providers to enable the delivery of switched video services over existing DSL facilities via the installation of a single card, the IP Resource Card (IRC), anywhere in the network. Among other functions, the IRC processes IGMP signaling flows and controls video switching at the perimeter of the network, even at remote terminal (RT) locations.

"The ease with which service providers can add video to existing access networks based on the Calix C7 is significantly enhanced with Platform Release 2.1," stated Tom Corker, Calix general manager of the Access Products Business Unit. "The IRC allows service providers to opportunistically market switched video services without having to make a substantial upfront investment in network equipment while also allowing them to leverage this infrastructure over both optical and metallic access networks."

Also part of Platform Release 2.1 are features that simplify software upgrades in large-scale networks, enhance the ability of newer service delivery networks to interoperate with legacy systems, improve diagnostics and management of packet infrastructure, and add sophisticated power management features that augment the system's ability to survive power outages. "Calix continues to demonstrate a commitment to the incumbent LEC market, as is evidenced by release 2.1 and strong port shipments" said Teresa Mastrangelo, Broadband Access Networks program director, RHK.
