SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Cortina Systems, Inc. (Cortina), a fast- growing leader of intelligent communication solutions, today announced the acquisition of ImmenStar, Inc., a privately held semiconductor company that specializes in passive optical network (PON) System-on-Chip (SoC) technology. This synergistic acquisition enables Cortina to extend its leadership across multiple markets—from the core of the network to subscriber access points—by delivering a unique portfolio of products that combine intelligent bandwidth, the highest density and the lowest power requirements.

“The recent growing demand for instant access to music, TV and video requires service providers to install passive optical fiber optic cables,” said Drew Lanza, General Partner at Morgenthaler Ventures, Cortina Board Member, Raynet Founder, and Project Manager on the first commercial PON system 15 years ago. “Cortina has shown it has the right mix of expertise in high-speed analog and digital semiconductor circuits to accelerate the adoption of PON in a big way.”

“As service providers invest heavily to offer triple-play services, Cortina’s acquisition of ImmenStar will help remove the last infrastructure bottleneck and deliver efficient bandwidth across the network infrastructure,” said Amir Nayyerhabibi, President and CEO, Cortina Systems, Inc. “While we already deliver best-of-class solutions for solving the bandwidth barrier for core, metro and enterprise networks, ImmenStar‘s technology allows us to offer our customers a complete end-to-end solution.”
