OTTAWA -- Meriton Networks Inc., a leading provider of carrier-class wavelength networking systems, announced today that AltaLink Management Ltd., Alberta’s largest electric transmission provider, has deployed the Meriton High-Speed Metro-Regional Architecture for its high-speed backbone. AltaLink selected Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) equipment from Meriton Networks to light the network. A number of reasons drove AltaLink to the Meriton Networks solution, including:

  • Low total cost of ownership: The Meriton systems provided the best balance between value and performance.

  • High level of scalability: WDM provides outstanding scalability for AltaLink’s network, with excellent options for future growth and expansion.

  • Fast installation: AltaLink’s network was installed in record-setting time, enabling the transmission provider to establish quick connectivity among its various sites.

Another key driver for selecting Meriton’s solution was the carrier-grade quality of the Meriton equipment, which was well suited for the utility’s mission-critical applications. These applications include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and internal data applications such as intranet communications, voice and storage. As an added bonus, the multi-service capability inherent in Meriton’s transparent systems enables AltaLink to have one common infrastructure for their SONET (OC-n) and Gigabit Ethernet connections.

“Deploying a Meriton high-speed network has given us a resilient, high-capacity network that is flexible, scalable and most importantly manageable,” said Clinton Struth, Senior Telecom Engineer for AltaLink. “It was a very positive experience for our team, and we believe the results give us the reliability and scalability we require in our market.” AltaLink’s high-speed network was built by SNC Lavalin ATP, a leading systems integration specialist for Alberta Transmission infrastructure projects.

“It is enormously satisfying to help organizations like AltaLink improve their communication networks by giving them quick, cost-effective access to high bandwidth,” said Mike Gassewitz, president of Meriton Networks. “That’s the promise of the ‘Fortune 5000 Initiative,’ which Meriton has been championing for the past few years.”
