WASHINGTON -- Negotiators face a strike deadline of 1 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow in contract bargaining between the Communications Workers of America and Sprint Corp. on behalf of 2,700 workers at Sprint local telephone operations in Oregon, Indiana, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida. Settlements were achieved this weekend for Sprint workers in the Pittsburgh area and in Hickory, N.C., reported CWA Vice President James Gurganus. Unresolved issues including subcontracting of work and wage rates for various job titles are unique to each set of local talks, Gurganus said. "We've been talking throughout the weekend and we're working hard to try to reach settlements without having to resort to strikes," he said. The talks cover about 500 workers in Central Florida, 1,600 throughout eastern North Carolina, 400 in Bristol/Johnson City, Tenn., 40 in Evansville, Ind., and 170 in Hood River, Ore. CWA represents about 5,000 Sprint workers and 700,000 members overall in telecommunications, journalism, publishing, electronics and other fields. Sprint Corp.
