LAS VEGAS -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS) announces production availability of the GigaStream(TM) Intelligent Switch Fabric, an optimized chipset (VSC872, VSC882) offering multi-service support with advanced QoS provisioning features. Targeted at both high-end Metro and Access equipment manufacturers, Vitesse's flagship GigaStream OC-48 Intelligent Switch Fabric enables system vendors to build high-performance switching platforms supporting configurations of up to 64 ports of Gigabit Ethernet (or 32 ports of OC-48) with a maximum of 80 Gb/s of aggregate user bandwidth, and up to 320 Gb/s of fully available backplane bandwidth. GigaStream's innovative active redundancy architecture allows customer systems to make back-up bandwidth fully available during normal system operation, thereby alleviating system congestion in addition to providing traditional redundancy in case of system failure. Applications for this chipset include multi-service routers, Metro Ethernet switches, and wireless (3G) base station aggregators. "Vitesse's GigaStream switch fabric addresses two primary design needs of our customers: intelligent switching with QoS guarantees and carrier-class five 9's fault tolerance requirements," said David Taylor, marketing manager for Vitesse's GigaStream product family. "GigaStream is a cost-effective solution that has gained wide acceptance among equipment manufacturers from a variety of networking market segments and cross the spectrum of switching applications in the high-end LAN, Broadband Access, and Metropolitan Area Networks."
