BERNE, Switzerland -- Swisscom's participation at ITU Telecom World 2009 from 5 - 9 October in Geneva will focus on innovations: the company will unveil a prototype robot which reduces construction work in fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network expansion. Right in time for ITU Telecom World 2009, Swisscom will roll out HSPA+, the latest-generation technology for mobile data transmission. Swisscom will showcase its offerings on Stand 5136 in Hall 5 together with partners from the Lake Geneva region.

In order to massively improve fixed-network performance, many countries are expanding their fibre-optic networks by installing fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). So too in Switzerland, where Swisscom is driving the expansion in partnership with electrical utilities and cable network operators. Among the innovations to be unveiled by Swisscom at ITU Telecom World in Geneva is the prototype of a robot which reduces the work involved in feeding the fibres into the cable ducts. Unlike conventional robots deployed in cable-laying, this robotic device is also suitable for installing cables in very narrow ducts with diameters of between 40 mm and 120 mm. Thanks to this innovative new robot from Swisscom, far fewer roads need to be dug up, causing less disruption for residents while also speeding up network expansion.
