Paris -— Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU)today announced that it has been selected by Shanxi Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile, to upgrade 90% of its home location register* (HLR) network in Shanxi Province, northwest of China. The contract was secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent’s Chinese flagship company. The upgraded network will be in commercial operation by end of June 2009.

(* The home location register (HLR) is a central database that contains details of each mobile phone subscriber that is authorized to use the mobile network.)

“Alcatel-Lucent’s industry-leading solution is enabling us to build a higher-speed, more reliable and more secure network to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of our subscribers,” commented Gao Buwen, general manager of ShanXi Mobile.

“Alcatel-Lucent has been a long-term partner for China Mobile and its subsidiaries, like Shanxi Mobile in various areas,” said Olivia Qiu, president of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in East Asia. “Shanxi Mobile’s selection of our solution further confirms Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in the SDM market in China, and consolidates our position in Shanxi’s 3G market.”

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 8650 subscriber data management (SDM) solution enabling Shanxi Mobile to build a 3G-ready network and fulfill the increasing needs of next generation communications. Alcatel-Lucent’s SDM applications are deployed globally in over 200 networks to support more than 775 million subscribers.
