PHILADELPHIA -- GWS Photonics Inc. has provided its 1.55 micron tunable laser prototype together with laser packaging design kit to a customer this quarter. GWS Photonics's tunable laser can be tuned over the C band, utilizing the GWS filter as it `engine,' with output power exceeding 20mW over the whole tuning range. GWS Photonics's tunable laser engine is in fact a novel tunable filter, which supports the high performances of the laser. GWS Photonics laser design kit serves as a base for its customers to manufacture the tunable laser by themselves, utilizing the GWS filter as the laser-tuning element. Similarly, other vendor customers could manufacture tunable sub-systems by utilizing the GWS filter. This tunable filter can be tuned by applying an electric field, with no moving parts. Commenting on the announcement, David Rosenblatt, President said: "Based on our novel core technology, GWS Photonics is paving the way for the next generation DWDM networks by introducing broadly tunable robust components. The products we are planning to introduce to the market by ourselves, as well as with alliance vendor partners, combine outstanding performance with large tunability at a low cost, as one 8" silicon wafer contains many hundreds of filters."
