HANOVER, GERMANY -- Marconi Corporation plc (London: MONI and Nasdaq: MRCIY) today strengthened its multiservice next generation optical portfolio with the launch of its SMA 1/4 Ultra Compact. The platform, targeted at applications in metropolitan networks, is designed to help reduce operators' opex and capex and allow them to deliver new services across a single, converged network.

The new Ultra Compact product builds on Marconis strategy to invest in developing next-generation optical networks. This investment has resulted in a new range of flexible multiservice platforms.

The SMA1/4 Ultra Compact typifies Marconi's multiservice vision in metro networks. It is a multipurpose platform with different roles in different markets. It can be configured to provide simple 2Mbit/s backhaul at STM-1 for legacy narrowband applications. It can also be used for STM-4 rings in edge applications in markets experiencing broadband growth.

"Marconi's multiservice metro networks are designed for flexibility, ease of use and with enhanced capabilities for service delivery and the ability to support new revenue streams," said Martin Harriman, chief marketing officer, Marconi Corporation. "Our multiservice metro message is 'more for less'. It is the basis of a powerful business case relevant to every operator in every ETSI market. Multiservice networks help revolutionise network operators business models."
