OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Enterprise customers with complex site-to-site communications requirements now have more connectivity choices. Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) has augmented its robust IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) services portfolio with several new offerings for business networks that can help improve productivity, reduce costs and enable new applications.

As part of its continuing efforts to address the emerging requirements of enterprise customers, Sprint has announced the following three enhancements to its IP VPN portfolio:

  • The addition of a Multi Protocol Layer Switching (MPLS) VPN solution to provide secure, any-to-any intranet connectivity.

  • The commercial availability of its peerless IP network, a native-IP backbone with no connectivity to the public Internet, which was previously available only to government customers.

  • A Secure Socket Layer (SSL) remote access VPN to provide secure access to corporate data and applications for remote employees, business partners and customers.

“Businesses desire network flexibility to accommodate changing requirements and facilitate migration from legacy networks to an IP centric world,” explained Randy Ritter, VP of Product Management – Network Solutions. “To this aim, we have expanded our IP VPN portfolio to give enterprise customers’ more choices to address specific business requirements.”

The centerpiece of these enhancements is an MPLS VPN solution that provides customers secure, reliable, any-to-any connectivity for domestic intranets. Sprint MPLS VPN is a network-based solution that is compliant with the RFC 2547bis technical standard. It includes a suite of value-added features and services such as end-to-end Class of Service, VPN Multicast and Managed Network Services (MNS) which customers can tailor to meet their specific needs. The performance of the MPLS VPN solution is backed by industry-leading SLAs with 100% credits for standard monthly recurring charges.

This offering represents the initial step of a broader MPLS VPN strategy at Sprint. Later this year Sprint will extend the MPLS VPN offering globally and integrate it with a full complement of value-added services, including network-based firewall and filtering, secure Internet access, integrated remote access and seamless Layer 2 internetworking. Implemented over Sprint’s 100 percent Cisco Systems infrastructure, the Sprint MPLS VPN solution is another in a series of IP networking milestones resulting from Sprint’s strategic relationship with Cisco Systems. This includes the Cisco-Powered Network designation (1999), the Multi-Service VPN designation (2002) and SprintLink Layer 2 services (2003).
