Broadcom's single-chip VDSL2/ADSL2+ multimode residential gateway solution enables next-generation telecom networks

BRUSSELS -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced a new generation of xDSL customer premises equipment (CPE) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions that support the VDSL2 protocol, with seamless ADSL2+ fallback. This single-chip multimode residential gateway solution brings unparalleled, standards-based silicon and software to the industry addressing all aspects of sophisticated digital subscriber line (DSL)-based services including Wi-Fi®, voice over IP (VoIP), Ethernet switching and IPTV.

Announced today is the Broadcom® single-chip BCM6368 multimode residential gateway that enables modem manufacturers and carriers to deploy high performance, future-proofed CPE solutions that support ADSL2+ or VDSL2. The new solution features PhyR(TM); the company's newly released impulse noise protection technology, multi-port Ethernet switching for video over DSL services, non-blocking 802.11n and multi-line VoIP capabilities. This integrated access device (IAD) solution incorporates a high performance MIPS®-based applications processor with hardware-assisted wirespeed bridging and routing, as well as hardware-assisted IPsec acceleration for virtual private network (VPN) termination, and support for USB 2.0 host and devices. With its ADSL2+ fallback capability, the BCM6368 enables carriers to deploy products in an ADSL2+ capacity and then remotely upgrade them to VDSL2 as their infrastructures allow.

The BCM6368 multimode residential gateway, along with VDSL2 central office (CO) equipment based on Broadcom silicon, has recently been qualified and selected by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) of Taiwan for mass deployment in its next generation IP services network in conjunction with ZyXEL Corporation's ZyXEL VES-1600 series and IES-5005 series next generation access products. This is the second consecutive VDSL2 CO and CPE win at CHT, and heavily leverages the software and system efforts of the prior Broadcom and ZyXEL solutions. As a result of this successful engagement, Broadcom and ZyXEL have teamed together again to provide VDSL2 IP DSLAM and CPE products to Chunghwa Telecom for its next generation VDSL2 access network. This current selection by CHT provides further market validation of Broadcom and ZyXEL's market leading VDSL2 products and the ongoing collaboration between Broadcom and ZyXEL to develop best-in-class, standards-based solutions for Ethernet aggregation, ITU G.992.1/3/5 ADSL1/2/2+ and ITU G.993.2 VDSL2 access markets.

BRUSSELS -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its innovative PhyR(TM) (pronounced "Fire") impulse noise protection technology has gained wide support from carriers and equipment vendors as the technically preferred re-transmission technology. Broadcom's PhyR technology provides several benefits over other application layer schemes and has proven to be a robust and cost effective solution in "real-world" deployments to enhance the performance of IPTV networks. Broadcom will demonstrate its PhyR technology at this week's Broadband World Forum in Brussels, Belgium.

Broadcom® PhyR is an uncomplicated, easily provisioned, firmware upgrade to the company's xDSL chipsets and is based on physical layer re-transmission technology (or PMS-TC) that enables carriers and equipment providers to dramatically improve voice, data and video services to their customers, while delivering as much as a ten-fold improvement in noise resilience. As a result, service providers are able to offer higher quality, more advanced triple-play services for ADSL2+ and VDSL2 networks that equate to better revenue opportunities with lower support and infrastructure costs. Additionally, IPTV systems equipped with PhyR will enable end users to enjoy improved network performance, better service coverage, fewer errors and an overall heightened viewing experience. Several early trials and deployments of PhyR technology by carriers and telecommunications providers worldwide have already provided several million customers with a better IPTV experience, and offered additional revenue streams and lower support costs for operators.

To further the adoption of its PhyR technology, Broadcom is leading efforts to standardize it, which will enable operators to deploy a standards- based tool for their entire customer base that provides superior impulse noise protection technology and leverages all of its benefits.

Traditionally, video services provisioned over copper loops have been susceptible to noise sources in the ambient environment that limit the coverage area over which services can be made available, or may even reduce video quality by inducing "macro-blocking" or corrupted images. Quality IPTV deployments require carriers to provide a level of impulse noise protection and margin that dictates an achievable data rate and the loop length over which voice, video and data, or IPTV services, will be delivered. While traditional approaches for increasing noise protection have an improved effect on residual errors, they unfortunately have an adverse effect on the serviceable reach and data rate, thereby limiting the service coverage area.
