REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network platforms for video, voice and data services, today announced that it demonstrated a PacketCable(TM) Multimedia (PCMM) solution integrating the company's digital video and cable modem termination system (CMTS) platforms at this week's CableLabs Summer Conference in Keystone, Colorado. The demonstration sourced standard digital video feeds delivered via satellite, allocated them guaranteed bandwidth using CableMatrix's PCMM-compliant On Demand Service Platform (ODSP(TM)), and modified the contents for distribution to PCs and IP set-top boxes.

The PCMM specification makes use of IP technology to provide dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) signaling mechanisms that allow different applications to request and obtain bandwidth from the DOCSIS(R) 1.1 or 2.0 data link layer. It enables the delivery of media-rich IP applications and services that have high QoS requirements, such as live video programming, videoconferencing, and on-line gaming.

"PacketCable Multimedia is a crucial standard for enabling BigBand Networks' vision of delivering any media to any one at any time," said Ran Oz, co-founder and chief technology officer of BigBand Networks. "The standard was leveraged in this demonstration to enhance integration of our CMTS and digital video platforms, achieved just six weeks after completing the IP Cable combination that added the Cuda CMTS to BigBand Networks' platform portfolio. Together, these leading products enable IP devices to access any content including high-quality video programming."
