Save energy, dress in black

You've Been Blackled

11:15 AM -- So, this morning I was Blackling things. This is supposed to make me feel "Green."

For those of you who haven't seen it, Blackle is the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) search site that claims to save energy by using a black background. It's got a Darth Vaderish look to it. I like to use it just to feel like I have a little more of an edge.

Does it really save energy? Geez, who knows? Google claims "Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black." It even cites a government study that says so. Then again, there's a government study that proves just about anything, isn't there?

Here are some real questions about Blackle though:

  • Are the people using Blackle still getting to work driving solo in their Porsche Cayenne?

  • How much energy was consumed in the act of launching Blackle?

  • When Google-meisters are flying around on their custom 767, are they really thinking about saving energy?

  • How about all those Google data centers that are being driven by keyword advertising spawned by trial attorneys and get-rich quick schemes?

For the record, I drive a hybrid, but my vast consumption of computers, electronics, and entertainment devices probably puts me in a high carbon footprint bracket. Oh well, at least I'm not Al Gore.
