October 27, 2006
LITTLETON, Colo. -- Time Warner Telecom Inc., (Nasdaq: TWTC), a leading provider of managed voice and data networking solutions for businesses, today announced the deployment of Gigabit Ethernet Internet connections to the Indiana GigaPoP, located at IUPUI (Indianapolis University-Purdue University Indianapolis), and the University of Minnesota.
The Indiana GigaPoP will deploy and manage 1Gbps of Internet connectivity to Indiana University Bloomington, IUPUI and Purdue University's West Lafayette campus, as well as the vast majority of higher education institutions throughout the state of Indiana as part of the I-Light project that launched in 2001.
"The goal of the Indiana GigaPoP is to support the higher education community across Indiana," said Dave Jent, director of the Indiana GigaPoP. "As one of Time Warner Telecom's first Quilt Internet Service customers, we are pleased they are supporting us in this effort."
Additionally, the University of Minnesota contracted for up to 1 Gbps of Internet connectivity to support the University's faculty and student Internet connectivity requirements.
"The faculty and students have increasing needs for bandwidth as each year passes," said Peter Bartz, Network Operations Manager for the University of Minnesota. "This Internet connection from Time Warner Telecom will help us to meet these ever changing needs without straining our network."
Indiana GigaPoP and University of Minnesota are among the first two groups to contract for Internet connectivity from Time Warner Telecom, after the company was named a preferred provider of high performance network services for The Quilt CIS project. The Quilt provides network service to more than 200 Internet2 universities and thousands of other educational institutions across the U.S.
"Time Warner Telecom is pleased that the Indiana GigaPoP has chosen our service to support this significant effort," said Barbara Hansen, general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Indianapolis. "Indiana colleges and universities will benefit from the bandwidth capabilities Indiana GigaPoP is bringing to higher education throughout the state. With this kind of research network available, business and industry will have even more incentive to look to Indiana for future growth opportunities."
