The WiMax Car!

Well, the 'pre-WiMax' car anyway...

Proof, if it were needed, that WiMax -- and {dirlink 2|39} -- are everywhere.

This time, the omnipresent chipmaker has teamed up with Venturi Automobiles to deliver an electric-powered sportscar [ed. note: an oxymoron, surely?] called "The Fétish."

Intel has put an Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR) "pre-WiMax" box in the car that is intended to communicate with the owner wherever they happen to be.

For Venturi this addresses the most worrisome aspect of owning a battery-powered car. "The stressful days of not knowing whether or not your vehicle is charged are over," the company crows.

The Monaco-based auto-maker also envisages using the technology as a means of remotely managing and diagnosing the car.

But, of course, there's one catch with this plan at the moment. The Alvarion box uses fixed wireless technology, so the vehicle has to be stationary when transmitting updates -- the connection would be dropped if it was driven around at speed!
