Onwave Sonet/SDH framed data ADM expands Fibre Channel/Gigabit Ethernet reach to thousands of kilometers

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- ONI Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS), a leading provider of optical telecommunications equipment for metropolitan and regional markets, today announced the ONWAVE(tm) SONET/SDH Framed Data Add/Drop Multiplexer (SFDADM) for the ONLINE2500 optical edge service platform. Designed to overcome the wide area network (WAN) limitations for data protocols, such as Fibre Channel (FC), FICON and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), the new ONWAVE card enables service providers and enterprises to interconnect storage area networks (SANs) and Ethernet local area networks (LANs) over thousands of kilometers via the existing global SONET/SDH infrastructure. "With the new ONWAVE SONET Framed Data ADM, carriers will be able to add profitable enterprise services to their networks easily and rapidly," said Jianhui Zhou, vice president of Product Management, ONI Systems. "We are seeing a strong interest from our customers in connecting SAN islands cost-effectively across the WAN using our ONLINE2500 platform. By multiplexing Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet services into an OC-48/STM-16 SONET/SDH envelope -- which can transparently transport these services across any vendor's network or over coarse WDM wavelengths -- our customers can maximize bandwidth utilization and leverage their existing infrastructure. This new card demonstrates our commitment to maintaining our leadership in the storage internetworking market." ONI Systems Inc.
