Apple's iPhone 4 Press Conference

1:00 PM -- What are you expecting out of Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPhone 4 press conference tomorrow morning?

Apple has merely said that it is about the iPhone 4 and not given any other information yet. The way I see it they have three main options:
  • Total recall: A possibility, but a hard one for Apple. A recall would be nasty right before the company reports its quarter. Apple can also point out that despite the media attention on the antenna problem, many of its customers are perfectly happy with the phone.

  • Bumper crop: Free bumper cases or a refund for any user that wants one. This seems like the most likely outcome tomorrow, to me at least. It gives Apple time to work to fix the antenna issue, too.

  • Maintain the status quo: Apple could stick to the line that every phone looses signal when held a certain way and that its software update will give a better idea of what coverage is available. Somehow this seems like the least likely option to me though.

    What do you think?

Perhaps Apple will only announce that White iPhone 4s are shipping now. They like to make a big deal about things that should've been there from the start....And I think bumper cases (and some more blame) will be issued.

    My guess is

        - Maintain the status quo, if you are not happy return it. We feel it only effects a limited # of people.

    augmented with,

        - We are working to improve it, if you are not happy return it now, or in the somewhat near future you can exchange it for an updated model. This is a recall but a veiled one which helps save face. They already said you can return it. Meanwhile many will break/scratch it and so forth so that it will not be eligible for exchange anyway.

The bumpers are only more trouble as it really only helps a bit and is not a solution. If they gives those out and people are still complaining then they lose more credibility and gave away a bunch of bumpers to boot. Frankly if it were functionaly perfect you need these anyway as it is VERY fragile and the glass will break / scratch very easily.

I am a developer and have had one since the first release. Maybe I am too close to it, but aside from the antenna/dropped call problems, breaks too easily, and all the other ones like wifi/bluetooth, proximity, sw buges, etc., it just seems to have grown old on me...I find it kind of boring at this point. Went into an ATT store the other day and both phones had kids on them playing stupid games (no I mean really stupid kids games). I have never used one as my phone becuase of poor connection quality most of which I chalked up to ATT. But I think there is a whole group of like 75% or higher that really do not even view it as a phone first and foremost, but kind of like a toy. And I think Apple realizes this, so why recall it totally when 75% plus want the toy. The others who need the thing as a tool can return it and maybe we get them back later...

This looks to me like Apple is fed up of telling individuals that they are holding the device in the wrong way, and it wants to take the opportunity, with the media coverage the company always gets, to tell iPhone 4 users not to be so dumb and just put their hand somewhere else, and that they should have figured this out for themselves.

And then they'll throw in some other announcement so it doesn't look like they've gathered the press just to say that their customers need to wise up and stop moaning.

I mean, really, these people have paid for the product...they just need to get on with their lives...

Entirely possible, there's a part of Apple's audience that seem to enjoy being techno-masochists: Buy the iPhone, moan about AT&T, moan about Apple, then turn round and buy the next one.

Good one, Sarah. Here's what Dave Letterman had to say about the iPhone this week:

That's just because you're holding it wrong.

(Have we run that into the ground yet?)

So far the Apple line is that every smartphone suffers from the bar drop issue.
