SAN JOSE, CA -- Alidian Networks, developer of optical networking products for metropolitan-area networks (MANs), has opened a research and development center in the Atlanta, Georgia, area -- the company's first expansion outside its Silicon Valley headquarters. William Saunders, a 12-year veteran of Nortel Networks, has been named general manager of the facility, reporting to Dr. David Newman, Alidian co-founder and vice president of engineering.

The new R&D center will develop technologies that complement Alidian's recently introduced Optical Service Network (OSN) product family, which allows heterogeneous data and voice services to be transported efficiently across carriers' metro networks. Initial efforts will focus on network management solutions and low-end customer-premise versions of the products.
