Agilent Announces Switch Chip

BÖBLINGEN, Germany -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A), a leading provider of innovative technologies for communications and life sciences, today announced first sample availability of a new crosspoint switch integrated circuit targeted at very high bandwidth networking systems. The chip is part of Agilent’s concerted focus on providing semiconductor solutions for metropolitan and long haul networks, including recent announcements of OC-48 fiber-optic transceivers and parallel-optics modules. The chip also adds to Agilent’s line-up of switching products for networking applications, including the Photonic Switching Platform and a recently announced InfiniBand switch product.

The crosspoint switch IC (HDMP-3268) is a 68-port by 68-port device designed to route data in high-performance core network equipment, such as optical cross-connects and add-drop multiplexers that route data through the Internet. Each data channel supports speeds up to 3.125 gigabits per second (Gb/s), providing total throughput of over 200 Gb/s. The HDMP-3268 combined with parallel-optics modules (HFBR-712BP transmitter and HFBR﷓722BP receiver) and a 12-channel clock/data recovery chip due for introduction later in 2001 comprise Agilent’s full data-path solution for switch fabrics up to 2,048 by 2,048 in size.
