SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Lightwave Microsystems, recognized as a leader in the manufacture and marketing of planar waveguide circuits and integrated optical components, is pleased to announce the availability of a fully hermetic Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) DWDM Multiplexer/Demultiplexer.

"Reliable components are becoming bottlenecks in the migration of telecommunications to optical networks. Despite aggressive expansion of manufacturing capacity, supply is falling farther behind soaring demand and lengthening delivery times hold back providers' services. The products Lightwave Microsystems offers are among those sorely needed for relieving this bottleneck," said Jay Liebowitz, optical components director at telecommunications research firm, RHK.

"This product is a result of our extensive packaging expertise," said John Midgley, Lightwave Microsystems' president and CEO. "To our knowledge, this is the world's first hermetically packaged commercial 40-Channel AWG. We feel this device answers the needs of manufacturers trying to solve the dilemma of finding reliable optical components for their systems that are readily available in high volume."
