Introduce the industry's first User Datagram Protocol (UDP) stack core optimized for an FPGA

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX - news) and Insight Electronics introduced today the industry's first User Datagram Protocol (UDP) stack core optimized for an FPGA. The UDP stack core provides a cost-effective solution for transmitting voice and data over the Internet. It can be used to create low cost consumer products such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones, Internet intercoms, remote security monitors, Internet-based voice recorders, and simple thin clients for home networking applications.Developed by the Xilinx XCoNet team and MemecCore, the IP division of Insight Electronics, the UDP stack core is a highly optimized hardware FPGA implementation of the transport layer. A unique feature of the core is that it exhibits zero stack latency and can therefore operate at line speeds. Xilinx and MemecCore used the Synplify ProTM synthesis product from Synplicity, along with Xilinx FPGAs, to develop the UDP technology and UDP stack core. The UDP core can also be implemented in the Xilinx Virtex, Virtex-II and Virtex-E FPGAs. "This UDP core sets the precedent for allowing an FPGA to be connected directly to the Internet and is the first in a series of products to demonstrate this capability," said Steve Trimberger, director of Advanced Development at Xilinx.
