Bring on the cloud TV. Ahead of this month's NAB conference, Imagine Communications has introduced a new end-to-end video platform dubbed CloudXtream.
One of many vendors tackling the multiscreen video market, Imagine Communications is positioning its new platform as a modular solution for linear, video-on-demand and DVR service delivery. CloudXtream is designed for both programmers and distributors, and it supports everything from video packaging and encoding to storage management and cloud orchestration.
As part of the launch of its new platform, Imagine is also debuting two solution sets under the CloudXtream umbrella. CloudXtream cDVR is targeted at broadcasters and mobile operators that want to launch new direct-to-consumer cloud DVR services. It's also being marketed to traditional pay-TV providers and new online video distributors looking to extend their multiscreen offerings.
CloudXtream DAI supports digital ad insertion with tools for managing multiscreen ad delivery across live, on-demand and recorded video. It also features an analytics suite for optimizing ad placement, and a distributed architecture for service scaling and redundancy.
The launch of CloudXtream follows on the heels of Imagine's acquisition of RGB Networks in January. Touting a similar platform name, RGB had its own CloudXtreme DVR and ad insertion products. (See Imagine Makes RGB's Exit Dreams Come True .)
However, Imagine Vice President of Product Marketing Glenn LeBrun is careful not to single out RGB's contributions to the new CloudXtream solution.
"This is far from a simple recast of RGB's assets," said LeBrun. While the new platform does integrate RGB's technology, LeBrun noted that Imagine has had its own research and development team working on development of CloudXtream for the past year.
