STOCKHOLM -- Banverket Telenat, one of Sweden's largest network capacity suppliers, has signed an agreement with Tellabs to enhance its national network with Ethernet capabilities from the Tellabs(R) 6300 managed transport system. Banverket Telenat plans to deliver new high-speed data services to its main customer in the Swedish railway sector and to use the Ethernet capabilities of the Tellabs 6300 to offer flexible service level agreements.

Banverket Telenat has been deploying the Tellabs 6300 system since 1996. It will now implement high-speed Ethernet capabilities over this platform, continuing the upgrade with new nodes over the next two years. The nodes are part of the Tellabs 6300 system, a third-generation SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) solution that delivers profitable data and voice services.

"In order to expand our service offerings we needed to enhance our network. With Tellabs' advanced Ethernet technology, we are able to take advantage of the differentiated and flexible Ethernet services," said Eva Karin Andersson, chief of transport networks, Banverket Telenat. "With the introduction of new high-speed Ethernet capabilities, we are now able to offer new and differentiated services efficiently and cost-effectively to the railway sector."

By enhancing its existing SDH network, Banverket Telenat will maximise use of network resources and add new customers easily. The Tellabs 6320 edge node has the benefit of being a compact and scalable product with high-speed Ethernet interfaces. All Tellabs network elements are managed by the integrated and open Tellabs(R) 6300 network manager, which can manage the full range of Tellabs' third-generation Ethernet, SDH and DWDM network elements.

"Tellabs' MPLS-based Ethernet offering is a powerful tool for carriers that want to be a market leader for Ethernet services while making the most of their existing network," said Bill Burns, senior vice president Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Tellabs. "With a more effective and scalable network architecture, Banverket Telenat can provide new services to its customers and handle traffic in a more efficient way, which will have a positive effect on operational expenditures and revenue growth."
