NEW YORK -- Sphera Optical Networks, Inc., the first provider of all-optical metropolitan gateway networks, today announced geographic expansion plans in leading U.S. and European cities. The metropolitan deployments, already underway, are scheduled for completion during first quarter 2001. The expansion adds to Sphera's existing and newly extended New York presence that supplies high capacity network bandwidth to carriers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs), and worldwide network service providers.Sphera is basing its metropolitan expansion on the market demands of service providers that need network gateways with dynamically allocated bandwidth, extended reach and rapid provisioning. These metro-city areas include Boston; Chicago; Dallas; Los Angeles; Miami; Northern New Jersey; New York; San Francisco; San Jose; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Northern Virginia; London and Frankfurt.

"Customers continue to look to overcome the challenges associated with global metro-bandwidth-bottlenecks and to move at the speed of light in order to increase network efficiencies and performance," said Harold Grossnickle, chairman and CEO for Sphera. "Our rapid expansion plans target cities with significant Internet penetration, Web-hosting and international connectivity where we will provide networks that satisfy high bandwidth and capacity needs."
