At MWC 2018, eleven mainstream operators and many leading global enterprises, including Intel, Microsoft, and CyberCloud, joined Huawei's opening ceremony for Cloud VR industry cooperation. These enterprises will work together in leading the development of innovative end to end Cloud VR solutions that increase the commercial implementation of the technology, and bridge current gaps in the VR industry.
With home broadband reaching Gigabit access speeds, Cloud VR solutions are now viable for commercial deployment. The parties will draw on their respective strengths to make this a reality — Huawei's advanced network solutions, Intel's leading chip solutions, Microsoft's cutting-edge mixed reality (MR) platform, and CyberCloud's VR cloud rendering solutions.
The parties will collaborate with VR industry partners across various fields, including VR live broadcast, games, and terminals. Building on operator commercialization of VR, the industry partners will leverage their advantages in end to end Cloud VR solutions, explore the commercial value of end to end Cloud VR features, and aim to maximize the profitability of Cloud VR services for Gigabit home broadband.
Will Zhang, Director of Huawei’s Strategy & Marketing Dept, said "To facilitate the development of the entire VR industry, Huawei launched the VR OpenLab industry cooperation plan in October 2017. Our value proposition is to cooperatively develop the Cloud VR business ecosystem and to drive the growth of operators’ Cloud VR business through innovation. We hope that we can leverage the operator market and facilitate the business prosperity of the VR market with all partners in the industry."
Zeng Xingyun, Director of Huawei’s Network Solution Dept, said "We developed the Cloud VR business solution prototype 1.0 in 2017 with the joint efforts of Huawei’s iLab and many partners in the industry, marking a milestone toward the implementation of Cloud VR applications. We hope that more members join Huawei’s VR OpenLab in 2018 to collectively build an all-win ecosystem."
Lynn Comp, Vice President and General Manager of the Visual Cloud Division, Network Platforms Group at Intel, said, "Intel brings a broad range of technology for the next generation of immersive VR experiences, Intel® Xeon® processors are the cornerstone of CPU systems that perform immersive media transcoding, computing, and rendering."
Nancy Li, Head of International Markets for Windows Mixed Reality at Microsoft, said, "Microsoft is the leader in VR and AR technology with the Mixed Reality vision to enable the VR/AR developer and partner ecosystem. Additionally, Cloud VR has chosen Windows as the operating system of choice."
Han Jian, CEO of CyberCloud, said, "CyberCloud has the world's leading cloud cloud-based technology, and cooperates with established GPU chip vendors and cloud platform solution providers in the industry to provide solutions for rendering and running Cloud VR service content based on VR cloudification and GPU virtualization technologies."
Operators at the ceremony indicated that VR will play an important role in network engineer training, significantly saving training costs for operators. Only when VR is used by operators internally, they can then be confident about promoting VR services to the market.
