FOSTER CITY, Calif. -- RiteKom Photonics Corporation, provider of high quality, cost effective optical networking components, today announced an extension of their Unicorn Transceiver product suite to include Single Fiber Gigabit Ethernet transceivers for use in access applications. The new Unicorn 1109 and 1205 for Gigabit Ethernet compliment the exiting Unicorn 109 and 205 155Mbps transceivers, and are the smallest form factor bi-directional transceivers available on the market today. Taking advantage of the Unicorn's small form factor, the new product allows access equipment manufacturers to develop high port-density switches occupying less front panel and printed circuit board space. By manufacturing in production quantities in an ISO 9001 certified plant in Taiwan, RiteKom offers an enormous cost advantage, enabling systems integrators to produce low cost equipment. The resulting lower costs of access equipment allow fiber to the home to become a reality, something RiteKom is working hard to achieve in the US market. "Fiber to the home and other first mile issues are still being debated in the US, but in Japan and other parts of Asia, the market is already there," said Dr. Hank Hung, RiteKom's vice president of the optical device division. "The future of Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) in the US will depend on simple specifications for low-cost, interoperable and easily implemented equipment. Single fiber bi-directional implementations are cost effective for the network provider, and our competitive transceivers contribute to bringing the economics of first mile deployment down to realistic levels."
