LONDON -- University College London [UCL] has purchased Procket Networks' PRO/8000[TM] series routers for its research and campus networks.

The PRO/8801 series will be used for the routing of network traffic at University College London network traffic as well as its advanced research facility. This research facility focuses on IPv6 and IPv4 protocols, network monitoring/management, optical internetworking, multicast bi-directional PIM, and Quality of Service [QoS] with a focus on data centre or grid computing applications. University College London, Computer Science Department is recognised as a world-leading centre of excellence in computing research and networking. UCL has over 24,500 staff and students worldwide.

"No other routing vendor offered such advanced capabilities for Data Centre applications in a core IP router. The University College London was very impressed with the stability and system capacity of the PRO/8801 router," said Professor Anthony Finkelstein. "In addition to delivering industry-leading performance and scale for our University network, Procket Networks is delivering next generation capabilities that our researchers need to advance their research."

According to the recently published Dell 'Oro Group Five-Year Forecast Routers' Report, high-end router sales will be the fastest growing routing segment from 2004 through 2007 with a compound annual growth rate of 14%. By 2007, high-end routers will generate US$2.4 B in sales, with more than 80% of those sales to Service Providers. This high-end router segment includes large enterprise users who are looking to improve the switching and routing performance of their corporate data centres.

"Data centre, grid computing clusters and server farms are growing as the Internet grows. With the United Kingdom's Broadband Britain initiative, the need for cost effective, scaleable core IP Networking solutions will only increase. Procket feels that our PRO/8000 series meets these requirements by leveraging our silicon, software and system technical advantages," said Brad Kishani, vice president of worldwide sales, Procket Networks.
