SHENZHEN, China -- ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has been selected to build Portugal Telecom (PT) a D-WDM metro network, throughout Portugal mainland and its islands. As the exclusive equipment provider of PT for this network roll-out, ZTE is supplying a full-series of D-WDM products and engineering services.

The multinational carrier PT has 90 million users across 14 countries. With 12 million users in Portugal, it is the country’s largest telecom operator. As a result of rapid subscriber growth at PT in combination with the large-scale deployment of new data services, such as IPTV, and a global trend for fibre in/copper out, PT has increased the support for data services in recent years. In the less densely populated suburbs, existing SDH-based networks have limited capacity, this in combination with long distances between different sites and insufficient fibre resources, makes a network overhaul essential. Growing bandwidth demand and flat network development have driven PT to build an intelligent, maintainable and reliable D-WDM transport network to face the traffic challenges from new services.
