China Mobile Dishes Out 100G Deals
Chinese operator giant awards OTN equipment deals as it builds out its transport network to support 4G.
China Mobile has awarded a number of 100G optical equipment deals to three vendors as it bolsters its transport network to support its enormous 4G radio access network rollout.
Three vendors have landed deals: Alcatel Shanghai Bell Co. Ltd. , Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , and ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763).
Bao Zhichung, international director of ZTE bearer networks, said the contract to deploy 20,000 km in OTN equipment across China's western provinces was the company's biggest 100G deal. He said the rollout was likely to be completed by year's end.
Huawei will supply the East China portion of the contract, while Alcatel Shanghai Bell landed the deal for Northeast China following its framework agreement announced in March. (See Alcatel-Lucent Soars on $1B China Deal.)
China Mobile is halfway through the construction of the world's largest 4G network, with 500,000 LTE-TDD base stations forecast to be installed by the end of 2014. (See China Holds Key to LTE TDD.)
