PARIS -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Oni Communications, a leading communications operator in Portugal, today announced the establishment of a superfast 100 Gigabit-per second-connection over the fiber-optic network linking Lisbon, Portugal and Badajoz, Spain, creating one of the fastest, highest capacity data networks in Europe.

High-speed data networks are at the heart of the digital economy, supporting services such as video streaming and multimedia content distribution, social networking, cloud services, e-commerce and a wide array of business services. To meet the ever-growing demand for these high-bandwidth services, Oni Communications is dramatically increasing capacity on its network, while maintaining transmission quality and keeping costs in check.

To accomplish this, Alcatel-Lucent upgraded Oni Communications’ Lisbon-Badajoz link, which was already supporting 10G channels, to 100G. This successful trial demonstrated that Alcatel-Lucent’s single carrier 100G optical coherent technology increases the traffic handling capacity of the fiber-optic link, while simultaneously reducing operations and maintenance costs and lowering power consumption.
