LINTHICUM, Md. and LONDON -- Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that ENERGIE AG Data will deploy the CN 4200™ FlexSelect™ Advanced Services Platform and ON-Center® Network and Service Management Suite to improve multi-site connectivity between ENERGIE AG Oberösterreich, one of the largest utility companies in Austria, and its local subsidiaries. ENERGIE AG Data will also utilize Ciena’s CN 4200 to deliver Gigabit Ethernet and storage services to business customers in Upper Austria, when the division launches its enterprise and wholesale offerings. Datentechnik Austria GmbH, a leading systems integrator and recently-appointed Ciena partner in Austria, will implement the solution.

ENERGIE AG Data is the telecom services arm of ENERGIE AG, which is a leading infrastructure group in Austria that owns 12 separate companies, specializing in energy supply and distribution to business and private customers. The Group also offers gas supply, water and wastewater treatment, and waste disposal, in addition to telecommunications services.

A key element of Ciena’s FlexSelect Architecture – a flexible hardware-based, software-driven approach to transitioning to next-generation, converged networks – the CN 4200 is a service-oriented, next-generation WDM transport and aggregation platform. The CN 4200 will enable ENERGIE AG Data to improve the efficiency and performance of the Group’s private optical network, which connects more than 1,400 sites throughout Upper Austria, as the company begins to migrate its current SDH-based network toward WDM platforms to support the growth of advanced data services.

“Ciena’s 4200 platform, combined with Datentechnik’s skills and expertise, is the ideal solution to optimize our network capacity and efficiency and support new services. As the CN 4200 supports multiple services on a single wavelength, we’ll be able to get the most out of our network investment as well as reduce the cost of running it,” said Dr. Manfred Litzlbauer, managing director at ENERGIE AG Oberösterreich Data. “The CN 4200 is also a very flexible solution because ports can be configured remotely to support any optical protocol as needed and different customers can be managed individually across the network. This puts us in a better position to launch new telecom services more quickly and cost-effectively once we enter the business market.”
