Collaboration introduces second-generation soft-decision forward error correction (SD FEC) technology on KPN International's pan-European 100G WDM backbone

AMSTERDAM -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and KPN International, a leading telecommunications and ICT provider, have successfully introduced the second generation soft-decision forward error correction (SD FEC) technology on KPN International's pan-European 100G WDM backbone, marking a new era of 100G. The network was planned to span 1,400 kilometers between Amsterdam and Paris (via Germany), but later extended by 300 kilometers at tail ends due to a surplus of transmission capacity. SD FEC is the most advanced error correction technology in the optical transport field and a cornerstone of the widespread commercial use of 100G. The use of Optical Digital Signal Processing (oDSP) modules, essentially a 400G technology breakthrough, achieves lower-penalty WDM transmission with lower power consumption per bit. Specifically, the second generation SD FEC system empowers a transmission distance of 4000 km, which is 1000 km longer compared to the first generation SD FEC system, resulting in a 30% higher transmission performance. The use of the second generation SD FEC system on KPN International's network has demonstrated the maturity of Huawei's new 100G technology and 400G-ready module. KPN International is always at the forefront for deploying latest transport technologies, and its pan-European WDM backbone network, which was deployed by Huawei in 2008 using NG-WDM products and the first to be upgraded to coherent 100G by Huawei in 2011, is one of the largest and most advanced WDN networks in Europe.
