WOBURN, Mass. -- Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:SWKS), the industry's leading wireless semiconductor company focused on radio frequency (RF) and complete cellular system solutions for mobile communications applications, today introduced five new solutions to offer a complete family of fully integrated 802.11 wireless LAN front-end modules. These highly integrated devices join the SKY65201, the world's first 802.11b/g WLAN front-end module, which was announced in June of this year.

Skyworks' new line of front-end solutions reduces the number of components required for building routers, PC cards and PCI adapter access points. In addition to the company's existing 802.11b/g module, Skyworks now offers two 802.11a products and two 802.11b/g products, including a high-performance version and an ultra low-cost implementation. The suite also includes a new tri-mode 802.11a/b/g module that, for the first time, gives designers a single comprehensive semiconductor platform upon which to support all of today's most popular standards and applications.

"Skyworks is unique among wireless LAN semiconductor suppliers in our ability to combine industry-leading products such as our power amplifiers, switches and filter functions into a single convenient module that dramatically reduces system design time and cost," said Gregory Waters, Skyworks' vice president of Cellular Infrastructure and Wireless Data.

"Leveraging our cellular handset RF integration expertise, we were the first to market with a WLAN front-end module and are now building on that foundation to offer options spanning virtually any combination of 802.11 -- including several frequency bands and multiple modulation techniques. Our customers can now develop complete architectures with 20 to 40 fewer components, saving valuable space in PCMCIA, Mini PCI, USB and compact flash platforms."

Technical Details

Skyworks' new WLAN front-end module family supports the 802.11a, b and g wireless LAN standards both individually and in the combinations of 802.11b/g and 802.11a/b/g. The frequencies of operation include 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and 4.9 to 5.85 GHz and support complementary code keying (CCK) for 802.11b and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for 802.11a/g up to 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM). The five new 802.11 WLAN front-end module products include:

  • SKY65200 WLAN 802.11a/b/g module: features two heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) PAs with built-in power detection capabilities, a diversity switch manufactured in a GaAs PHEMT process, plus two highly integrated low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) components -- a low-loss band-pass (BP) filter for receive filtering and a dual diplexer, which incorporates two high-band and low-band diplexers into a single component. The diplexer coupled with the GaAs diversity switch allows for sophisticated RF signal control of six RF paths in a very small space. Meets linearity requirements of up to 21 dBm of output power to the antenna for 802.11b, 16 dBm for 802.11g, and 13 dBm for 802.11a. The SKY65200 is offered in a 15x15x1.7mm package.

  • SKY65202 WLAN 802.11a module: includes an HBT PA, BP and low pass (LP) filtering, and a diversity switch manufactured in a GaAs PHEMT process. Meets linearity requirements of up to 15 dBm of output power to the antenna, and is offered in an 8x10x1.7mm package.

  • SKY65203 WLAN 802.11b/g module: includes a single-ended HBT PA, and LP filtering for transmit, a diversity switch manufactured in a GaAs PHEMT process and a BP filter and balanced output for receive. Meets linearity requirements of up to 21dBm at the antenna for 802.11b and 16dBm for 802.11g, is offered in an 8x10x1.7mm package.

  • SKY65204 WLAN 802.11b/g module for low-cost applications: meets the same high linearity requirements as the SKY65203 and SKY65201, but replaces the diversity switch with individual transmit/receive (T/R) and antenna switches, and is offered in a smaller 6x6x1.7mm package.

  • SKY65205 WLAN 802.11b/g module: maintains the same performance as the SKY65204 but includes balanced receive port functionality, and is available in the same 6mm x 6mm x 1.4mm package.

All of Skyworks' WLAN front-end modules are offered in low-cost, laminate-based, plastic multi-chip module packaging, and each is screened at operating frequency prior to shipment for guaranteed performance. Pricing in OEM volumes of 50,000 is $3.25 for the SKY65200, $2.25 for the SKY65202, $1.60 for the SKY65203, $1.25 for the SKY65204 and $1.25 for the SKY65205.
