Huawei claims lead in UMTS/HSPA with 28 new contract wins in 2006

SHENZHEN, China -- Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd (Huawei), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced that it recorded 28 new UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System/High Speed Packet Access) contracts in 2006 to become the world's top UMTS/HSPA solutions provider with a total of 47 UMTS/HSPA contracts to date. With its rapid growth of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network deployments over the last three years, Huawei has since emerged as one of the world's top three players in this space.

Huawei's leadership is supported by over 10,000 engineers dedicated to research and development of GSM/UMTS technologies. The areas of innovation have included Distributed Node B, UMTS900, iDBS Indoor Coverage solutions and high-efficiency Iub-IP transmission solutions. These enhancements help operators improve network capabilities while lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO). Huawei also develops 2G/3G unified telecom-grade IP platform technologies to ensure future oriented network deployment of IP-based end-to-end UMTS/HSPA networks.

In the field of GSM technologies, Huawei offers IP-based EnerG GSM solutions adopting 3G technologies, including high efficiency power amplifiers and interference cancellation. The solution, selected by many top-tier global operators including Telefonica and Etisalat, helps operators enhance wireless network coverage, improves voice quality, and prepares them for seamless network transformation. As at December 2006, Huawei has shipped 800,000 new generation EnerG GSM BTSs transceivers to operators worldwide.
